This paper was written by Maudemarie Clark and published in 1983. In the first paragraph of this paper, she writes: “There is an apparent contradiction between Nietzsche’s view of knowledge and what I shall call his ontological doctrine of the will to power, the doctrine that the world is will to power. The proposal I will defend for dissolving this apparent contradiction is that we interpret the ontological doctrine as a self-conscious myth which is not intended to supply knowledge about the world, and that we distinguish from it a second, psychological doctrine of the will to power which Nietzsche believes does give us such knowledge.” She defended this position throughout her long and productive career and retired from the University of California, Riverside, at the end of June 2024.
